Originally, the Hemi was to be the standard (and only) engine in the 1969 Charger 500. Alas - it was not meant to be. I believe (I may be wrong) that Dodge thought to Homo. the car, it had to include the engine that was to be raced. But Ford Homo'd the Boss 429 separate from the car they would race it with so Dodge made the 440 Magnum std with the Hemi optional.
