Voting to leave them for the following reasons, most of which have already been mentioned:

1. New owner may prefer stripes.
2. Assuming black paint is all in good condition; I would be afraid of causing some damage to the underlying black paint. I realize they can be slowly wet sanded off using a lot of care, and maybe there won't be any damage.
3. The term "spot in" the black paint really scares me. There is no other color that looks as good when done right and looks bad when there are flaws. I can't see modern lacquer blending will with 50+ year old lacquer and looking perfect under the lights.

Let the next guy make the decision.
