In 1964, Vince Piggins was manager of product performance for Chevrolet Engineering. That year, he proposed an idea to build a mid-size performance street car, which would be powered by the new 396-cu.in. V-8. Known as the Z16 Chevelle, the project involved 201 1965 Malibu Sport coupes.
