The Great Hammerhead Shark is one of the newest species of sharks. It first appeared about 20 million years ago (sharks have been around for 400 million years).
They range in size from 2 ft 11 in to 19 ft 8 in and can weigh 6.6 to 1,278.7 lbs.
The "hammer" is called a Cephalofoil which allows the shark:
Change it's up and down direction simply by raising or lowering it's head
Scan for prey two times faster than any other shark
Gives the shark 270 degrees visibility while swimming in a straight line.
Allows the shark to smell blood up to 1/2 mile away
Can detect prey hidden in the sand that other sharks miss
