Typically there is a standard palette of "normal" colors - traditional red, white, blue, black, etc. The quantity of offerings is agreed to by the marketing and the assembly plant.

Added to that you have a selection of more exotic colors: spring specials, tri-coats or premium colors, metalflakes, trendy colors, etc.

Those are the ones you typically see come and go, based on popularity as defined by "take rate" or sales. More popular colors might stay several years, like a Verdoro Green, whereas less popular color would get phased out after a short period of time.
