Bill, when I bought my '69 SS396 Nova back in '91 we did some mild work to the motor. I found that my car did run better with the rear hood up about 1.5" gap in the rear. Not sure if it was heat, "air-trapped" in the engine compartment or just more air to the carb. This car/combo would run 10.40's back then and shifted 78-8200 with the M21 and 4.56/4.88's.
