GM Design Center was interested in exploring the idea of a self-storing, retractable roof panel. Using a ’69 GTO as the base, the car was dubbed the Aero II, following after the ’68 Aero Vette show car.
The Aero II was based on a production GTO lower body and a more formal rear-roof section was grafted on. Presumably, the more upright roofline made for additional room for storage of the retractable roof. Though attractive and innovative, this model never made it past the prototype stage.
