When Hubble scientists take photos of space, they use filters to record specific wavelengths of light. Later, they add red, green, or blue to color the exposures taken through those filters. The result is full-color images that have a variety of purposes for scientific analysis.

The imager chips (and cameras) developed at the Sarnoff Labs in Princeton transmitted color images. They are in the Hubble and many NASA satellites. I saw a satellite image of a sailboat in Greece and I could read the number on the sail. I helped develop the microlithography process that made those chips.
We also developed IR imagers which are very popular with the military.
