Naturally, there’s a story behind the “behind the scenes” story above:



When we were setting up for the above shot Robert told me that he wanted me to turn the wheels slightly to the left and that we would let the car “roll” while he walked backwards.

“Robert” I said “this is 3900 lbs of racecar with a spool - and slicks. It doesn’t just ‘roll’, especially with the front wheels turned”.

“That’s ok” he replied. “We’ll just have my faithful assistant give it a little nudge to get started”.

“Ok” I said – dubiously.

His poor assistant gradually increased his efforts, without much success, until he was quite red in the face and sweating a fair amount.

“Tell you what” Robert observed. “How ‘bout we position it at the top of that little hill – and you can leave the wheels straight”.
