TENNESSEE: Workers load uranium slug into the X-10 Graphite Reactor's concrete face (circa 1943) Built during WWII as a part of the Manhattan Project, the X-10 Graphite Reactor was the world's second artificial nuclear reactor. According to the US Department of Energy, it used neutrons "emitted in the fission of uranium-235 to convert uranium-238 into a new element, plutonium-239."
