GM Division Codes included w/ stamped drivetrain components are often misunderstood being they're not part of VIN itself but helpful when known as Division Code List below.
Knowing the first 3x Digits represent Division + Model Year + Vehicle Built Plant is always helpful for quick/basic identification of loose parts without need for casting info, not just engines but often Muncies too.

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Pontiac
3 = Oldsmobile
4 = Buick
5 = GMC
6 = Cadillac
