Rockefeller co-founded Standard Oil in 1870 and went on to control a staggering 90 percent of all oil refined in the United States, becoming the nation's very first billionaire. In the 1890s, the oil baron expanded into iron ore and natural gas, and had huge influence over the country's railroad industry.
