On a business trip to Washington, I checked into the historic Intercontinental The Willard hotel just blocks from The White House. I had a conversation with the front desk agent about the history of the hotel. The hotel bar has been in operation since the 1890’s and was a favorite watering hole of President Grant who would walk to the bar from The White House. Knowing this, those with special interests would wait in the hotel lobby and ambush the Grant in the lobby with their special interest requests. The annoyed President came to refer to these gadflies as “Lobbyists “.
