If blasting isn't an option I went this route with an old distributor for another project and it turned out ok. Other pieces of the distributor I used other forums of cleaning as well as chemicals but for this discussion I'm referring to just the distributor housing.
Powerclean or degreaser with hot water. Then use Black Magic Aluminum Wheel Cleaner and a green Scotchbrite pad.
Also did the same on an intake.
