What a fantastic discovery! You should definitely make an effort to contact previous owners as they may lead you to the original VIN tag. I assisted a friend with an LS6 Chevelle, and upon looking over the car I pointed out that the VIN tag did not match the cowl or the plant on the trim tag. He contacted one of the previous owners who told him he had been waiting for that call someday and had the tag in his tool box!
