Stay in Santa Monica close to the pier if you can but add a half hour to whatever your plans are because Santa Monica blvd. always has slow moving traffic and it will take that time just to get to the 405. The first thing I always do when I am up in that area and I have time is go to the Getty museum just north of Santa Monica and if I still have time to spare I will go to the Museum of Natural History by USC. The Getty is a must see because of the artwork of the Masters and the ocean views of the area. If you still have time for the Doughnut Derelicts car show and you end at the Santa Monica pier figure leaving your room at about 4:30am to get to Huntington beach by 6:00am on Saturday morning when all the good cars are there. It is pretty much over by 8:00am.
