SAAC has had many test cases on this subject. More then a few Cobras have been ripped apart in accidents over the years. Frankly, some cases have been decided in favor of the VIN tag car and some case have been decided in favor of the chassis stamped car. Invariably, the "continuous history car" (CHC) prevails.
