Default Re: 1969 Z/28 or RS/SS 396 tuxedo black

Black was not a "standard" color for the last part of the 68 model year, and for the first part of the 69 model year. I know of an original black 68 Z (painted red now!!!!) that has a - - paint code. I BELIEVE (but cannot prove) that all the late 68 black Camaros and early 69 black Camaros were - - cars. I met a guy with 13 or so 69 Camaros. Two were black, and both were -- cars. He wanted to see the tag on mine just to be sure there really was a 10 10 car made. Mine is late, 08A.

As for the reasons, I can only speculate. Here is my theory. The body work (especially where the roof panel meets the quarter panel) was generally pretty crappy. Black shows everything. I know on my car, I releaded that area because I just couldn't live with the waviness. I know, it is now officially over restored. Too bad. I believe they just got a lot of customer complaints as a result. BTW, the lower 1 inch of most of my tail panel had no (that is right zero) black paint on it; just primer. I over restored that as well.
