Here is a link to the
November 1968 Pop Hot p15 shot you might be thinking about.
I thought I had the July 69 Hot Rod <span style="font-style: italic">13 Second Grocery Getter</span> posted on my site. It does look to be diagonal mesh. There are a few other 68 and 70 articles there. The 68 L79 Chevy II looks also to be diagonal mesh. As does the Car Craft September 68 <span style="font-style: italic">Only One in Town</span>. As does the June 70 Super Stock article L78 Nova.
After a quick review of the articles I have, I do not see one with a square mesh. However there are plenty of differences in the magazine cars from what is accepted as the norm. Heck if the pictures were posted here as a car to critique, it would be cut to shreds. As example the Hot Rod May 68 L34 car has plastic buttons holding the inner fender flaps in.
