For years that was not illegal in Sweden. Now it is.
Many years ago I bought this old racecar about 500 miles from home. I needed it for parts, but was going to sell the rolling chassis to someone else when I had the parts off the car. When I looked at the VIN-tag I saw it was handstamped. We called the previous owner early Sunday morning. He had a party the night before so he wasn´t happy, but he told me he had bought a 1966 hardtop in Germany and put a 62-65 subframe on it. He also had a wrecked -67 with a Swedish title but the VIN-tag was missing, so he handstamped one.
Since we had travelled so far we didn´t want to come home emptyhanded.
I told the guy that bought the car from me about the handstamped tag, but he didn´t care.
