My 'educated guess' is that the specified clamp size is designed for whatever outside diameter surface it will be clamping on. In other words, if you have a 2 1/4&quot; OD exhaust pipe and it will be going inside a muffler inlet or outlet, and you will be squeezing the OD of the muffler inlet/outlet, you will need a larger clamp than 2 1/4&quot;.
