I looked at a BE under those circumstances some time ago; an untouched axle in a project car. It was in a '67 Camaro and had been there for decades.
Both of the loose BE axles I had ended up in COPOs because neither had the original. One is in a Yenko; the other is in ZL-1 #40. I sold it to Lewis Swan when he owned the car in the '80s. I took the axle out of an Olympic Gold Yenko in a junkyard in 1981.
Many COPOs have been destroyed; some existing COPOs do not have their OE rear axle. The axles are out there somewhere.
