Re: Scott's 1st Project.... 72 Z28
On my 73 firebird which still has mint undercarrage paint and overspray, the overspray coming from the sides under the rockers was limited in how far the heavy spray went, but under the rear of the car there was much more overspray. It started about 1 foot in from the tail panel under the gas tank and extended well into the area that turns down under the back seat.Your firewall overspray into the trans tunnel looks spot on,it pretty miuch fades in around the seam for the main floorpan. If the red oxide is a litte darker then in the pics, then it should be just right.
My car has been a street race type hot rod all it's life and both me and a lot of past owners spray bombed the undercarrage over the years to clean it up.One day while plotting out a new exhaust system I took a rag with some solvent to the crud and it went right down to the original sealer, overspray pattern and all. Most of the paint was "over sludge" since as far back as the late 70's,so it kind of preserved it well. The paint under the gas tank area peels off in sheets once I get a good edge to dig under.Maybe someday I can post pics of it.I recently went under there with some home mixed rustoleum and redid the areas where the original paint was too crusty.I wiped it down and smoothed it out and mixed red oxide metal primer and gloss black until it made a very close color that I applied with a brush. The car isnt a resto job by a long shot but it is neater then most of these beaten old mules.
