Some Alternator Help

Can anyone tell what's missing or what the problem might be that is causing the alt to be about 1/4 inch out of line with the pump & crank. I cant seem to find a good diagram in my assem manual. Unfortunately I dont remember if this problem existed before I removed the alt. I'm pretty sure I got it back together the way it came apart. It's a 69 alt.

Any ideas!!!!!

It's on a 70 z28

It might be your camera angle, but is that an incorrect thin stamped Alt. pulley you're running?..That or do you have a standout spacer behind your waterpump pulley?
The correct deepgroove W/P pulley is stamped #3976060 and should not have any spacer behind it.
The correct deepgroove machined Alt.pulley is #1970831 and won't have a number stamped on it but it does stand out 1/4" from the fan surface.

Re: Some Alternator Help

The water pump & crank pulley line up perfect, I bet the alt pulley is wrong. If I read correctly you said the correct alt pulley would pull the belt forward 1/4" ??

It sits off the fan face about a 1/4".
Here's one for reference on D&R Classics' website, although they didn't come shaded gold from the assembly line back then.

Thanks Rick,

Ill try the repop. I have some old alts laying around. I can get an old fan off of one of them. Is the 1100837 fan different or are they all the same?

Re: Some Alternator Help

I bought a couple of new fans from GM. They aren't quite the same as the original one but don't cost much.

Mr 70

If Alt.pulley #1970831 was a original factory item would it be minus the keyway??????
