70 LS6 L78 choke linkage rod for Holley
 

Does anybody know if any of the repo parts guys make a correct for 70 LS6/L78 Holley choke linkage rod.? Seems like the one everybody has is "straight" and it should have a tweak to it (similar to the 69, but not as long due to flatter intake for 70. Anybody got pics of what a correct original lools like.? Thanks Mucho

Hi Jim,
I think your problem is probably the lever on the carb being incorrect. Most of the time when these carbs get rebuilt, the wrong actuator lever gets installed . The correct choke rod is a straight rod, I have a few originals and I've run into this problem before. If the lever on the carb is flat, you will have alignment issues. The correct arm or lever on the carb should be stepped outwards for clearance. If this doesn't explain the problem adequately shoot me an email [email protected] and I'll send you some pictures.

Rick's picture above shows the correct stepped choke fast idle cam cage...problem is, they're about as rare as gold-plated chicken lips. Holley (in their infinite wisdom) doesn't even use (or even produce!) the correct stepped cage for their current release 4492/4557 carbs; they use the more conventional `66-`69 style cam cages.

The straight cage obviously works, you just have to jimmy the choke rod a little bit to get it to fit. Obviously not the ideal scenario, but until Holley (or someone else) reproduces the correct stepped cages, whaddayagonnado? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Thanks Rick for the pic. That's exactly what I was talking about. Eric, the flat cage as you call it will not work with the factory choke and rod setup without binding during warm-up. You can bend the flat style so it resembles the original and thus allowing the choke to operate without the rod binding up against the choke cover. Not the ideal set-up but it will work and a much better alternative to modifying the choke rod to reach the cage.

My apologies, I wasn't clear enough when I said that you had to "jimmy the choke rod..."...what I meant to imply was that if you tweak the rod and the cage you could get them to work.

With a little patience and some trial-and-error, I'd bet you could bend up a stepped choke rod out of stainless welding rod (or something similar) that would function acceptably, even if it wasn't "factory correct."

Hey Sully, don't know if you are still looking for this choke set up but I found one that works, Sold by the Original Parts Group part # DECS40B. This is the entire set up 70 LS6 L78 choke kit....
