Dust shield/caliper bracket finish
Anyone know the correct finish for the 69 Chevy disc brake dust shields? I have the originals and they are in good shape, but need to be plated. Are they nickle, galvanized?? I also need the caliper brackets re cad plated. Any recommendations where I can have each/both of these parts plated?

Re: Dust shield/caliper bracket finish
Original G.M Dustshields were stamped from already galvanized sheetmetal. It is my opinion that used dustshields can not be galvanized in the same manner as the flat sheeting is done. I had mine clear(silver)zinc plated as I feel many others do also.
The caliper brkts are yellow zinc dichromate http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...lone/Frame.jpg |

Bill,
I believe the Chevelle dust shields may have been galvanized from the factory. Whatever the plating, it was tough. M22Mike does his restorations with silver cad for the dust shields and yellow cad for the caliper brackets. The cad is a bit more durable than the zinc, especially for the northern climates. We use a local plater here in Akron,OH., he does spectacular work. Maybe Mike will chime in with pix. Phil Woj. |
Re: Dust shield/caliper bracket finish
Ditto to all that was said, originals were stamped from galvanized sheet stock. If you ever have the chance to look at a original car, you might notice the edge of the dust shield may show some rust. Proof that they were stamped from galvanized sheet stock.
Maybe Post Sedan will take a look at his new survivor silver L78 Chevelle and have a look. And yes, your only option now is to plate in white zink or cad. Thats what the repops are. Cad is great if you can find a plater to do them, holds up much better than zink, IMO. here is a shot of my last batch of Cad. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../COPO02835.jpg Mike |

Re: Dust shield/caliper bracket finish
From what I recall from my last conversation with Gregori, I don't believe that he is able to do cadmium.
His platings are very nice, some may not be 100% correct, as they are noticeably brighter than the parts in Mike's pics. |
Re: Dust shield/caliper bracket finish
I had a booster done by Gregori last year. And it was Yellow Zink ,which is usually brighter or more shiney.Came out very nice too.
He does very nice work, and is one of the hobbies good guys if you need his services. Mike |
