Muncie Numbers Help
Tranny is in my '55. Can anyone decipher these numbers and tell me what type it is? Supposed to be a close-ratio unit and has an audible whine in 1st and 2nd--can't hear 3rd as well.
Has a drain plug. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...vy/55Trans.jpg Right case: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...sRightCase.jpg Tail housing: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...sRightTail.jpg Inspection cover, studs/nuts: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...sLeftCover.jpg Number on inspection cover, upper right corner: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...verNumbers.jpg Tag on inspection cover, upper right corner: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...55TransTag.jpg |
Re: Muncie Numbers Help
It is a 661 Case with a lower plug so you have a decent shot at M22. Can you post the stamped numbers on the rear of the main case of the passenger side. They are showing in the first picture but not legible.

Re: Muncie Numbers Help
I have seen many that have drilled and tapped for the bottom plug, easier to change oil in.

Re: Muncie Numbers Help
661 Muncie cases all have fill and drain plugs so that in itself tells you nothing about what gearset it contains.
I'm not an OLdsmobile guy, but I believe KA was the code used for 1970 Oldsmobile M21 transmission. Maybe an Olds expert will help out more? Chris |
Re: Muncie Numbers Help
Tag #1234762KA is the part# for a 1970 M-21... This trans is obviously put together with parts laying around... 1970 should have shift shafts that use bolts to attach the shift levers... 3884685 sidecover was used 1966-68 model years... As mentioned above all 661 cases have drain plugs M-20's,M-21's and M-22's... Hope this helps... Crash
