1970 Monte Carlo SS 454 LS5, # match Blk/Blk/Blk

1970 Monte Carlo SS 454
It is rare to find a no excuse Monte Carlo SS these days, many have some “story” and no or fake documentation. Not this one. No stories. Original Drivetrain. POP. Many Big Block 402’s are passed off as SS car’s, don’t be fooled. Read the SS454 FAQ here:

http://www.firstgenmc.com/tech/ss454.shtml

First off, this is NOT a show car or even a restored car. It is a nice driver quality, dependable car. The paint, while professionally done, is not flawless. It is however a solid 8 out of 10 though. The body however I would rate a STRONG 9.5 out of 10. No rust ever! What little deviancies that the car may have are more than made up for in that this car has the most important part, the ORIGINAL, BORN WITH, NUMBERS MATCHING 454 LS5 engine. No restamps, and the VIN is by the Oil Filter and legible. As well as Rust Free, and a great body.

As backup documentation, this Monte SS features an original Protect O Plate (with the GM auth tape).

Finally, this car has the old Personalized Claifornia plate “SS454ME” from back in the day. Long before they were faking these cars.

She has the “boxed” control arms, as well as the Air Pump Relay behind the gas tank for the air ride system. The plastic lines are still on the car (but brittle) for the air ride system, and the rubber hoses are still under the hood. The air ride compressor is with the car, but loose in the trunk and I do not know if it works or not.

This car was RUST FREE before she was painted, and the only evidence of old body work was a filled dent about 6” x 8” on the passenger rear side. This was professionally reworked, and a NOS LH fender used and the body cleaned in prep for a black paint job. The paint is a Great daily driver job. Anytime you fix rust, well, they call it “cancer” for a reason. The black base coat clear coat has a great shine, and is a above average job. There are a few dirt motes, and she has not been wet sanded yet, so they will probably buff out. The car was originally a WHITE car with black interior and black “halo” top. She is now Black/Black/Black!

The interior is about 50% new. Headliner, Drivers Seat cover, and Vinyl Top. I bought a interior kit, and the rest will go with the car for future use. This included the passenger seat covers and foam and rear seat cover. The console is in great shape, as well as the dash pad. There are NO rips or tears in the dash. This is an original bucket seat, console, no tach car (and yes, not all Monte SS’s got tach’s or even buckets seats. They were all upgrades, see http://www.firstgenmc.com/tech/ss454.shtml ). She needs the domelight reinstalled.

The engine/drivetrain is all original, other than the carburetor, distributor and air cleaner. The monte comes with a good Quadrajet core for rebuilding. In the trunk, I have the original metal gas line for the fuel pump to carb. Also, in the trunk I have the original distributor ready to be rebuilt. The engine has not been rebuilt, but still runs strong and only smokes a little when she has been sitting up, and only then at high revs. I would say that the engine could use a freshening up. No knocks, pings or other issues with the engine. Unlike so many of these cars, you can keep the battery hooked up and it does not drain the system. I have left her unused for 6 months, hopped in and she started right up.

All of the chrome on the outside of the car is original and untouched. Some in better shape than others. Front bumper can be re-chromed, rear would need replacing for a show car. Same thing goes for the side body and rocker moldings. OK for a driver, replace for a show car.

She has new mufflers, but needs the correct exhaust tips. I have a repop set that will go with the car. The underside of the car is clean and rot free. Little surface grime. The 12 Bolt rear is in great working order

Didn't they have an 'SS' emblem on the grille?

No,John Delorean would not allow that.
He wanted a European luxury design 1st,as well as a docile appearance for this car.

Nope. Not on the grill, as was mentioned, they did have the SS454 emblem in white behind the front tires in 1970. In 1971 they added a emblem on the rh side of the trunk spacer.

There has never been any documented 4 speed Monte Carlo SS's. There are a handful of big block 402 4 Speeds though. Many of the 402's have been "cloned" to look like SS's. You could even order the "Air Ride" system with non SS cars, and I have seen a few.

There has never been any documented LS6 Monte's either.

We always here the stories, but none have ever proved out true.

Nice cars, and ride great.

I for one despite the fact we cannot find a documented one know for sure they did exist with a 4spd since I also bought one for salvage in probally 84.It was rusted beyond repair but the drive train was 100% original.Like the one for sale it was triple black LS-5 454 4speed. I still have most of the drive train buried somewhere I would say as well as the muncie, shifter, pedals etc. It had the adjustable shocks and compressor which I just found in the last year and sold on e-bay as well as factory tack and guages, tinted glass and a AM 8 track.
Disc brakes were two piece rotors, power steering, F41 but no posi. Also had the windshield washer fluid monitoring set up. The floor hump for the shifter was factory installed for sure which was very clear when we cut it out.
Interesting part was it was a bench seat car and the only SS emblems I remember were on the fenders.
Years later after finding out some were saying the 70 monte never existed with a factory 4 spd a guy came and pulled what was left of the shell out of the woods since the vin and cowl tag was still in place and I had all the paper work but I never heard what he did with the remains. It was quite rough.

Re: 1970 Monte Carlo SS 454 LS5, # match Blk/Blk/Blk

Guys,
More than likely these were BB 402 cars, and yes the "Air Ride" system that was standard on all Z20 Monte Carlo SS cars was an RPO for other cars as well. I have seen a few non SS's with this system. In all this time, there have been more than a handfull of Monte 402's with a 4 speed show up. Never a SS. Statistics alone would dictate that at least one would have shown up.

Now, if you had the "LS5" out of that car and the vins on the "454" and the 4 speed matched.............

Like I said, there are many "ghost" stories of that kind. Also, the same thing goes for a Monte SS with the LS6, plent o stories and "friends" but no one has yet to have one spring up.

Is it possible? Sure, seemed like anything was back in the day https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif , I know I sure wish I was around and knew then what I do now!
