1970 L78 BLOCK 3969854

Have a 1970 L78 block out of a 1970 L78 NOVA, details as follows;

3969854

TO61ICTY

10W374389

F 30 69

The block is .60 over, fresh bore and honed, cleaned with new freeze out plugs and cam bearings. Block has been checked by my machinest and is ready to go, just add your crank, rods, pistons etc. I would wash it before assembly, I do this with all my motors before assembly no matter how clean it looks

Have pics if need to see, contact me for details if needed.

Asking 1,400.00

not including shipping which I am not sure how much will cost, will arrange with purchaser for best method and price.

Above block states casting date of June 30 1969

Assembly date of June 11th with a CTY 1970 Turbo 400/L-78 code.

Please educate me!!!!!

It appears to be a very late built Nova Vin. # 10W374389

Re: 1970 L78 BLOCK 3969854

I didn't notice that - that is odd - the block is definately not a restamp - I am 100% sure there. Just looking at the pics on it that I took - It shows F not E and the pad is T061 the next letter is an I - could it be a 1969 cast block but the T061 on the pad be 6/1/70 ???? As Jerry states a late Nova vin appears so it could very well be that any possibility???

Re: 1970 L78 BLOCK 3969854

Its possible your block was at the bottom of the pile in Tonawanda. Cast in June 1969 and not used until June 11 1970. The VIN is a late 70 build. Schools out.

Re: 1970 L78 BLOCK 3969854

The only other possibility is it was a virgin pad block and stamping was added later by someone that wasnt up on date codes, just casting #s.Ive seen that many times . There is a way to tell in some cases if it was an OTC block that was later stamped . Ive never seen a lead time over 6/7 months in 20 years[and ive only seen 2 that far off], not to say it couldnt have happened. In this case id say its more than possible.

Re: 1970 L78 BLOCK 3969854

If stamped later it was a dam good job - I have pics I can e-mail anyone who would like to see. I be inclined to think this is one of those situations where a block sat around or as Kevin said - bottom of the pile. Nice block either way - it deserves to be built and ran again, it's been quiet for a long time. Also - June 1st not the 11th - brings it closer by 10 days https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

The 454 out of my 70 chevelle was cast in mid August 69 and the car was built the first week of May 70.It is her original engine.Almost 9 months that puppy was sitting before it got used. Heads , intake, water pump, etc are all within days of each other.
