Do your self a favor get a hurst shifter and save your original Muncie
because after you spend a quite a few dollars to restore it
you will not be happy with it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Trust me.

Thats my question. How does the rebuilt muncie shifter feel when it's done. I imagine it looks great, but will I be able to put it in first gear, and not go backwards.

Depends on the design. The 67 and back with the lift up for reverse are not bad at all. The 68 and up that mounts on the cross member is a different story. No hurst that is for sure. If it is a driver fit a hurst with a modified Muncie handle on the 68 and up.If a show car overhaul your muncie one and shift slow.

Another option is the Hurst linkage with a Muncie handle. I believe several of the parts suppliers offer them. Has anyone here went that route? How close to original is the appearance and does it work correctly? I do know from experience that a majority of Muncie linkages ended up where they deserved, in the trash.

I bought a repop muncie shifter last year. Still locks up occasionally. Just ordered a competition plus and adapter to mount my stock handle. Adapters are available from chevy2 only for $13.95. Ron.....

I completely trashed my factory Muncie shifter to mount the handle on my Comp Plus Hurst, but boy does it shift better than that factory junk.

Ron,

A properly rebuilt Muncie shifter will work just fine for a driver providing you don't try to power-shift with it. Although I no longer do it, over the years I have rebuilt a number of them for myself and others with no complaints.

A common problem is that the reverse lock-out (detent) spring is broken and/or the fiber shift lever retainer is missing. Together, these two aliments cause the shifter to flop-around and makes it impossible to select the right gear. I have both of these repair pieces, (NOS) if you need them as well as a exploded view of the shifter so you can install them yourself.

I also have a restored 67-8 Camaro shifter minus the linkage for sale. It is show quality and works better then new. Jerry MacNeish has bought shifters from me in the past and has always been pleased.

Email me if interested. [email protected]
