Steve Shauger's Big Block Indy Pace Camaro!!!
<span style="font-weight: bold">1969 INDIANAPOLIS PACE CAR</span>
Wayne J. Young purchased the car on May 13th 1969 from McManus Chevrolet, 6117-21 S. Western Ave, Chicago, IL. Actually he gave it to his wife as a gift. The car is one of less than 500, big block powered pace cars built according to conventional wisdom. A total of 3675 pace car replicas were built in 1969. The car has very low 30,000 miles according to the original owner. The most likely reason the mileage is so low, is that for a rather slight woman, driving a big block (396 powered) camaro convertible with a manual transmission is not particularly practical. The car was given to Betty’s son Wayne in 1987 and he again drove it sparingly. Around 1988 Wayne attempted a restoration on the car and removed the engine. A year earlier, George O. had seen the car sitting in front of a house and inquired if it was for sale. At the time it was not, but as Wayne proceeded getting deeper and deeper into the restoration he started to feel the enormity of the task. On August 11th 1990 Wayne sold the car to George. The car sat until 2000 when a concours restoration was started, and ultimately completed three years later in the fall of 2003. . The car still retains its original engine, transmission and rear as well as many other components. Interesting Facts About The Car The car has had only three owners in 36 years.. This is one of three hundred 396 CI powered pace cars built in 1969. This car has the Z11 code which designates the car as an Indianapolis Pace Car for Norwood built cars. LA built cars were not coded Z11, but any convertible with 720 coded (orange houndstooth ) was a pace car. The was purchased new in Illinois and resided there until August of 2006 when I purchased the car. Mandatory options for the pace car were: Super Sport, Rally Sport, Deluxe Orange Houndstooth Interior, Cowl Hood , Spoilers. And 14x7 Rally Wheels. Re: Steve Shauger's Big Block Indy Pace Camaro!!!
nice car!
I am not sure where these estimates come up with the number of big block pace cars made a registry I created in the 70's had ~ 80 cars and ~ 20% were big blocks I personally owned 4 big block (see cover of Chevroland Nues from the late 70's) Z11 pace cars and I think any specualtion at 300 or 500 is on the conservative side ymmv |
