Has Mobil 1 changed???

Has any one notice that something is not right with Mobil 1 oil
This morning when I started up my Wife’s jeep it had a lifter
Hag up
I shut it off and checked the oil and it was full BUT it looked like mud
In my family we have four jeep Grand Cherokees with the inline six motor.
I check the oil every Saturday and have notice that all of them after a 1,000
Miles they all have Mobil 1 10x30 extended performance synthetic oil and
They all look like mud. Two years ago I had a 91 Blazer with the 350. when I got it at 20,000 miles I used Valvoline 10x 30 synthetic for 15 years and it never looked like this I change my oil every 5,000 miles and a few time on the blazer I would forget and got 8,000 miles and the oil still looked good back then I used the stock A/c oil filter put over 190,000 miles on that 350 and never had a problem on the jeeps I have been using Mobil one oil filter
So to night I changed The oil only had 3,800 miles on it . When I was draining it the oil had a funny smell This time I put in Valvoline synthetic 10x30 with the Mobil 1 oil filter After I was done I had a half quart of the Mobil 1 new oil I smelled it and it had this funny smell I then smelled the Valvoline and it smelled normal
The real test will be in a 1,000 miles and see on the stick what the oil looks like
Has any one else notice this problem with Mobil 1 ???

Re: Has Mobil 1 changed???

In general the extended performance oils are made on demand by the automakers, so that they can tell their customers that their car is cheap in maintenance. If you plan on hanging on to a car that uses this type of oil you should change it more often. Or just use a higher quality oil.

Re: Has Mobil 1 changed???

Just a few weeks ago I took a 1000 mile trip in my 04 Silverado and burnt a qt of Mobil1. It did look and smell skanky when I checked it. I have been using Mobil1 consistently since the 80's and have had a few spotless motors with over 100,000 miles. Never has this happened before. I dont what to think, I'll be changing the oil on tuesday. Will continue with the Mobil1. I'll ask my people at Mobil if they have seen this problem. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Has Mobil 1 changed???

Hi Norm:
Funny you bring this up.Like Chris I have run mobil 1 in everything since the early 80's even the snow blower and mower.I used the miles as a guide for changing 5000 max but more the color on the dip stick. It would always be so clear in the car and truck I could not see it on the stick. In the last year I have changed the oil in both vehicles probally three times more than usual for being dark but blamed it on the fact we did a intake gasket on the car and the truck being a 89 just picked up some gunk. The last change I also put valvoline in the car and the same day Mobil one in the truck. The car I just checked is clear on the stick and the truck after 800 miles is dark brown which is not normal.
It has always been a probuct I stood by but I think you are on to something.I am going to take it out of the truck to see what happens.
My last dodge ram went over 450,000 miles with it never apart and is still running.

Re: Has Mobil 1 changed???

This is something that I think Mobil has changed since last Nov https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Before that I had no problem
I know it is to soon to tell put 200 mile on jeep today with the Valvoline synthetic
Just pulled the stick out and it is nice and clear Took the oil cap off and it smelled normal just checked my sons 05 Grand with the 4.7 V8 . it has Mobil 1and it really
smell skanky. Has 1,800 mile on the oil and it is dirty as hell
what really got my attention is when I drained the oil last night and the oil was hot the smell was awful. The oil only had about 3,800 mile on it . It was the lifter noise
that morning that got me to check it out time will tell if the Valvoline does any better If any one come up with an answer I would love to hear what the heck is going on. The price for mobil 1 we pay this should not be happening https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif By the way these are all new jeeps with less than 25,000 miles. Valvoline was cheaper by almost 2 bucks

Ok I found this look like a lot of reading on this site it was stated that (surprised to find it based mostly on mineral oil (presumably Group III) plus a good slug of AN. It may also contain a small amount of PAO, but so small that I can't be certain.)

Ok this is what I have found out so far

The new M1 EP 5W-30 SM dated Oct 2006 just came out of the G.C. and it is MOSTLY mineral oil, presumably Group III. It also contains a good slug of AN and some PAO, but little or no ester

I have the Valvoline in my wifes Jeep
I am also going to try Royal purple in mine and see what does better Also looking to use a Wix oil filter
