Hurst Shifter Nut Questions
 

Looks like my original 69 Camaro L-78 came with a small block style square shifter nut instead of the BB round style. Could it have been due to supply issues? The shifter bracket is the correct BB style:

I'll check some Muncie shifters today from L78 Novas, and tell you what I find...

Sorry..wasn't thinking..my shifters are the factory Muncie units that bolt on the crossmember..not the Hurst you asked about.

Paul,
As far as I know, all factory BB Camaro's used the race track
shaped nut. I always considered this setup a sign of a
change-out at some point in the past.

Since the car is an original 20000 mile example, and all the parts are like new, I tend to believe that this is the original shifter. It even has the castle style bolts that attach the shifter bracket to the transmission.

Well Paul,

That would be a first for me. However, you can't rule anything
out with "The Genreal" now can you. I'd like to know if
any other members here have seen an "original" BB Camaro
with the SB style nut.

Another observation as well. The far left rod looks to be threaded
in very far forward. I don't think that is correct. I
had been told that this was one indication of SB rods being
used on a BB application. BTW, are the shifter rods stamped
with any numbers by chance?

Although I specialize in 67 - 68 OEM Muncie shifters, I've seen odd 69 Hurst things. More then likely, it was a supplier issue. Like GM in 69, Hurst relyed on many suppliers to feed their factory. If a supplier shipped a piece that was square rather then round it was sent to the inspectors. If it was in spec as far as tensile strenght, thread size, base metal, etc.. it was OK for production.

If you think the shifter is OEM, I wounld't worry about it.

All of the rods check out as BB issue. I will post a pic later.
