General Auction Rant
I'm going to apologize in advance for this so hopefully I don't offend anybody. I was at the Kruse auction on Saturday and and I saw something I've seen at other auctions and also online ads. What I'm talking about is the ridiculous use of underhood and underbody markings. In some cases it looks like the same person is doing this because the radiator has "-20" also an "X" at the upper rad hose, X's in several other places also paint dabs on everything. Also the obligatory vehicle color written on the firewall along with "M21" and of course top it all off with a "Caution Fan" sticker. The firewall writing is hilarious as it is very neat and straight like they found the one guy in the plant with the best penmanship. Again, sorry for the rant.

I will have to agree.. all of the X's and paint dabs are annoying. When cars have all of those marks... it makes you wonder what else is not correct?

Re: General Auction Rant
I concur with your rant. It just irritates me no end when I see these "clown cars" with 47 different paint daubs on every piece of suspension hardware. And of course the perfect markings on the firewall are always fun. That's one of the reasons I had my 5-year old do the paint markings on my car. I showed him the original pre-disassembly photos and he had a lot of fun duplicating the sparse original markings on the rear differential. He ended up being just as sloppy as the assembly line workers. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: General Auction Rant
I am sure your 5 year old was much more carefull.

Re: General Auction Rant
Seems like it's sort of an "all-in" or "all-out" situation on these cars. I reproduced the two firewall marks I found on my car and added the drive shaft stripe. Then I quit.
I've seen the cars you are talking about. Looks like Walt Disney threw up in the engine compartment! Too much....... |
Re: General Auction Rant
Oh, and the "Caution Fan" decal!? What car is that correct for?
I've seen this on 68-72 Olds A bodies and am pretty sure it's not supposed to be there. |
Re: General Auction Rant
We have a local dealer here in town that "restores" all his cars with the same marks....kinda like a Picaso of sorts..I can spot his artwork a mile away!
X's we don't need no stinkin X's.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif Steve https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: General Auction Rant
Before I restored my 69 L-78 Camaro, I looked at as many photos of original unrestored cars as I could and duplicated those marks, nothing more. Also, the existing inspection marks on the suspension were cleaned and left as original. Many cars I have seen are over the top restored with most things being too perfect. If you look at an original unrestored car, it is amazing how sloppy some of the quality and workmanship was. You don't usually see this in a restored car.

Re: General Auction Rant
I guess the "dealers" are looking for the uninformed buyer in some cases and these types of made-up details are a selling point. The car that really made me cringe at Auburn was this 69 SS Chevelle L78, Lemans Blue. The resto looked nice when I looked under the hood it reminded me of the time my kid got the 64 pak of Crayolas and went crazy on his bedroom wall (actually, his work was a little nicer).
