Tracking down ownership

Ok, my dad bought a 69 GTO Coupe in 1984. He drove it home and let it sit ever since He then gave it to me a couple of years ago because he had no time to work on it. I want to find the original owners of the car. We have the title but when my dad bought the car off a used car lot the title was messed up so he had to retitle it, causing him to be the only owner of the car (on title). Is it possible to track down the owners of my car?

I'm not sure show long the NJ DMV keeps their records
