1970 Nova SS 396 Help

Hi to all on this forum. I have a 1970 Nova SS 396 body. It shows 28000? miles on the odometer. It is missing the original motor, 396. From what I have been told the car is an original big block car,by the heater core and the radiator support and it has all the emblems and markings. Its last big event was in 1982 at the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals. I purchased it in 1983 before all the hoopla and cloning of Big block cars became popular so I am pretty sure its a Big Block body..It looks to be a 4 speed, bench seat rubber mat car.I was told a few years back that a dealer on the East coast had ordered all the Big Block Novas, but then came a recession in the economy and the cars went their merry ways. My question is what motor? L78 or L34? I found a little 4x8 paper under the back seat but it seems to deal with the interior trim codes. The vin is 11427ow303XXX. Anybody have any thoughts or onfo on this. Thanks....

Welcome to the site. There are people here very knowledgeable about big block Novas....but I am not one of them https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif BTW, I was a participant at the 1982 CC Street Machine Nats. First year it was moved to Springfield IL. I won a Doug Nash 5 speed trans there https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Chitown, Check your fuel lines. If it has an original fuel sending unit. With a return fuel line. It was a 350 hp car. 3/8 fuel line with no return 375 hp. Earl

Hi Chitown,

There are several things to check:

Make sure the core support has the big opening - but no extra holes on the driver's side for a/c stuff. Also, make sure there is a weldnut on the front of the passenger's side for the rad to bolt into.

Check the trans crossmember for the square opening with one angled corner.

Check for the bb engine mounts, they offset the block 1/2" towards the passenger side (as does the trans crossmember).

Check for the single 3/8" fuel line, but several L34 cars have been found with only one line - primarily early cars built b4 the end of '68.

Check the driver's side rear frame rail in the wheel opening for the dual exhaust plate.

Check for rear sway bar brackets welded to the underside of the floor boards above the muffler.

Check for all the disc brake stuff.

Let us know all the codes on the trim tag, and we can decipher them for you.

TR 732 = Interior is black bench seat
58 58 = Paint code top/bottom Autumn Gold Poly

Marlin
Could a 1970 Super Sport Nova get these Body side Mouldings?
Would these be the very same body side mouldings of which you just asked about & won yesterday?

This car has chrome molding around the front and back windows. Is this what you are speaking of? The roof drip molding is chrome also.....
