How about the VIN?

Yes. Fifth digit of the VIN must be an "R" (ram air/shaker) or "Q" (non ram air/regular air filter) for the 335hp 428 Cobra Jet FE style motor. Most of them were M code 351's that year, so check it out. Partial VIN # would be on the back of the engine, below the driver's side cylinder head. I don't believe Ford was real consistent during this time frame, as both my '70 Q-code Mach and my buddy's '69 R-code were purchased from 1st and 2nd owners, respectively, had unmolested, date coded motors, but no VIN stamps. As stated, the Marti report is cheap insurance here, for 15 or 20 bucks they'll fax you the documentation on how it was optioned when new.

You could be really lucky and have found a SCJ. If the car has V or W axle code, 3.91 or 4.30 gears, you have an SCJ. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Here's a link to a great Mustang Vin/Warr. # decode site. . You may want to give it a whirl before going for the Marti report? . Good luck! ~ Pete

I had a chance to buy one of these two years ago. The car was Black Jade with white guts R code with heavy duty 4 speed and W code 4.30:1 rear. The price was right but the wife said she wanted a converible instead. Ohh well I should have bought it and stashed it away. Mark

The Q code is the non-Ramair 428CJ, not as desirable as the R code Ramair 428CJ with Shaker. What is the rearend code?
