12 bolt decode KDC code?
I just picked up a 12 bolt rear. It is a factory 4 link setup. I haven't measured it so I don't know if it is A body or passenger yet. The code is KDC and it is a 1970 casting. Can anyone tell me what this decodes as? I don't see it in any of Colvin's books which leads me to believe it is Olds or Pontiac. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
The only thing I could find is that it *might* be a 1971 application for Chevelle/ElCamino.
Does it have the Chevy-style finned rear cover? Are the axles retained by c-clips or pressed bearings? |
Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
It has the standard Chevy cover. Not sure on the axles as the cover is on as are the drums.

Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
It's CKD suffix 2:73 open rearend for a 1970 Chevelle-Elco-Monte.
Starting in 1970,Chevrolet started the three code suffix and some of these were stamped with the "C" on the end, from my findings. |
Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
Rick,
Do you find that the 'C' stamping, whether it's a prefix or a suffix, is stamped separately from the other two letters? It appears that the old two position gang holder was used and the 'C' was stamped separately on the rears that I have seen. |
Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
That's what I have seen too.
There were 3 different plants assembling this rear,Detroit,Buffalo and Warren. I have seen them stamped C KK as in my cars example,as well as KK C. I would imagine being a new format, most were unsure of the position. |

Agreed.

Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
So it is a C KD Rear, but is actually stamped K DC. Is this correct?
Thanks, Jason |
Re: 12 bolt decode KDC code?
That's what I think.
Can you show us pix of the axle stamping? |
