454 piston question

I am a restorer not a machinest so I gotta ask, does anyone know if any manufacturer makes a stock shelf piston for the LS-6 that is .040? The engine is currently .030 over stock but needs some cleaning up. I am being told they make .030 and .060 and the .040's have to be custom made (spelled $$$). Thanks in advance.

Rick, Have you tried contacting TRW to see what they would charge?Might be cheaper to just bore it to 60 over?

I have not as I am letting the builder handle it. I am starting to think that it is a lot cheaper to go .060 as well but I really hate to bore the block that big if I do not have to.

My engine builder said the same thing,..you're choice is .30 or .60 over. I'd hate to go that big, .60, unless the engine was really worn.

I believe Speed-Pro H118CP pistons are available in +.040.

They have a +.210 dome and make about 11:1 compression with a 100cc head.

At least that's what the catalog says.

Good luck; BCD.

Late to the party, but I betcha some of the NHRA legal replacement pistons come in .040" over...go to NHRA.com, grab the part # from the Replacement Piston List, then call JE, or Ross or CP...and they'll be "dead on" on the dome specs, too...

Re: 454 piston question

NHRA's link is bad...here is what they show:

VENOLIA: 450-454
FEDERAL MOGUL: L2349
JE: 211401
ROSS: 104824

I know others like CP have 'em, but I'd betcha JE or Ross has what ya need on the shelf, and they both make good stuff...

Wiseco-1-800-321-1364, Venolia-(323)636-9329, CP Pistons-949-567-9000. You can go to the JE Piston website also. I would not go 60 over in less I really had to. Make sure you tell these people you want forged pistons.
