12 Bolt Axles worn
 
HI,

I have a 68 SS/RS 396 325 HP Camaro Coupe with a 12 bolt diff. I'm currently restoring the car and have recently discovered the axels in the 12 bolt are worn. The diff is the version where the axels sit directly on the bearing. What is the best method to fix this problem?

easy fix go online to "Randys Ring and Pinion" they make axel saver bearings that are slightly offset to ride on the untouched part of the axel...when installed it will run like new and you cannot tell unless the rearend is apart..best 30 bucks a guy can spend

I was using the axle saver bearings from NAPA auto parts 20 yrs ago.I think Autozone can get them,if you get in touch with a sharp counter person.

I just checked my old parts and still have 1 in stock.The part # is RP5707 BCA repair bearing.I called the local parts distributor and thats a good part number yet.Another number RP5708 fits the 10 bolts.

Hi! I am currently having one of my 2 axles done at one of the top 2 shops in the country. My one axle had a runout of .020...I believe; dont quote me! He has gauranteed to me that he can fix it. I will go by there in the next week and get his process that he used for you. Bear with me, I have limited time frames to do even my own stuff! I will get back to you! He had a very interesting adjustable plane shop tool that pinned the axle and had a slide base to adjust to the axle length, A very nice piece I might add! With an magnetic base dial gauge, adjusted the tool to read the surface at a fixed pointe; then manually turned the fixed wheel at one end to obtain the 360*'s neccessary to read the runout of wear.
