Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

Being as the picture shows it all polished up, and I'd assume you're both located down south, I wonder if it's not the same engine as in this post:

If I'm not mistaken, that polished engine has been around (and on) the block a couple times before...I think I've got a bunch of pictures of it on one of the computers here...not sure of the legality of the crest being put on there and sold if indeed it was done in '97...

Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

Chevy454,,thats whats got me lost right there,,the crest
being on it and it having the 3946053 casting#,In Alan Colvins book chevy by the numbers there a note about it is belevived that the 03 was the 1st ever casted ZL-1's, Could that been possiabile?? Did Yenko have blocks casted with the crest on them,,and who casted the blocks in 1997??,Was it Winters??,Just seems strange that that crest would have been casted into it in 97,wouldnt yenko had to give them permission to recast it with there logo ? I dont think this is the same block that mike D had,,the gentleman has had this engine for over 3 years,I would just love to know about it and if it belongs in someones REAL SUPERCAR !!
Thanks Everyone for your reply's,,This is a GREAT SITE !!
Thanks frank

Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

Yenko blocks if i'm not mistaken on this, only had YENKO on them. I never saw a crested block like that one. Also, yenko blocks had freeze plugs where the ZL1's had the 1/2 inch drive screw type plugs. Hope this helped! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

I believe the Yenko blocks were a Baskin-Robbins kinda deal, lotsa flavors...short deck or tall deck, press-in or screw-in freeze plugs, Yenko crest or lettering...not sure on the '97 cast date, that's kinda screwy, especially with the crest.

Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

That wouldn't happen to be the ZL 1 block that was for sale at carlisle a few years back? I remember seeing a 427 aluminum block with the yenko crest on it. Big dollars. I saw the motor for sale there a couple of times. If I remember Marlin was with me. Not sure what the castings were.

This Yenko-block was bought in Texas in 1984, according to the German guy that bought it. It has screw-in type freeze plugs, and the crest.

Re: ZL1- ENGINE HELP

What is the casting date on the block, Frank? I know Mortec shows it as being cast in '97, but I'm wondering if they didn't transpose the numbers and it's supposed to be "'79", which would be right in the hey day of Yenko ZL-1 production...
