Re: 1969 NOVA SHIFTER FOR M-21
Ralph, you can buy a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and the install kit, they still make them. Make sure you specify bench or bucket w/console. The oem Muncie shifters were junk, but if you want to be tricky get an old muncie handle cut and fit to hurst shifter. That way you have the best of both.Tom https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 1969 NOVA SHIFTER FOR M-21
Shame on you Tom!!! The complete OEM Muncie shifters are getting very difficult to find. Hacking one to adapt the handle to a modern Hurst is simply a waste of original parts!
Best bet is to buy a current Hurst from any Speed Shop and enjoy "rowing" the 4-speed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 1969 NOVA SHIFTER FOR M-21
Let me rephrase to calm the purists. If you should happen to come across a spare Muncie handle, weather beaten and worn, then use it to make a hybrid if that suits your fancy. Naturally it would be a sin to deface an original part from the GM assembly line, saints forgive me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Wilma: when I get my Yenko Chevelle to that point, I'd like follow your lead on the shifter. Have any trouble grafting the handle on? Seem sturdy??

Re: 1969 NOVA SHIFTER FOR M-21
Rob it's easy....just cut and weld...I did it to a 66 Chevelle set-up (sorry)

Many original / NOS parts are long gone due to misapplication. When possible, preserve or use factory parts on a well deserving car. By the way Tom.....Enjoy your Berger Car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |
Re: 1969 NOVA SHIFTER FOR M-21
dont cut a 4spd unit ever!
buy a 3spd shifter cut it off take the grinder and cut the same marks on the bottom as the Hurst handle drill two holes bolt on and go bang gears....sorry Craig I know how you feel about the factory shifters but how many 3spd shifters do we need around correctly restored???.. I plan to whack a 3spd model as soon as I find one that is not a total turd. |
