Those are cool. I bought an original one of these a few years ago just because they look neat... I've never owned a car that used one originally, and probably never will... but its one of those oddball parts I thought would be neat to have laying around. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif This is another piece I think you will start seeing more and more repros of as the price of originals keeps going up with every one sold. I think these were also used on early 70 Camaro and Nova L78.

Re: 1970 LS-6 Closed Element Air Cleaner

As an owner of a 1970 Camaro L-78, I have been interested for many years in the ABOVE style of Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner. Its my belief these air cleaners were on ALL the 600 1970 Camaro L-78's, from Jan thru July, Norwood and Los Angeles.
They were also used on the 1970 NON Cowl Induction Chevelle L-78's and LS-6's. I dont follow Chevelle facts and history, so I'd be interested if there is a # of cars related to the NON Cowl option.
Could William L-78 Nova please report back on which 70 L-78 Nova's got open element and which got the Dual Snorkel.
Did any mid model year change have to do with new 1970 EPA "noise" rules????????
FYI: The actual round air cleaner portion IS ALMOST IDENTICAL to the 1970-72 Z-28 Air Cleaner. It is only the Snorkels that were different
Thanks, Chuck Sharin

I see she added the LS6 stickers and the BIN price is reduced a little from the last listing.
Was that length /style snorkle used on any other air cleaner as a single intake?

Re: 1970 LS-6 Closed Element Air Cleaner

The snorkels themselves are just like the ones used on 68/69 325 hp SS396 air cleaners. The chrome lid is also the same as the ones used on many other GM products, including some GTOs I believe. To answer the question that seems implied but not asked, yes, there have been fakes of this air cleaner made, but with the way the body of the air cleaner is "flanged" around the hole where the snorkels insert, its usually pretty easy to see where the cutting ans splicing took place... just for safety's sake, and peace of mind, it's usually better to buy stuff like this in its original condition and restore it yourself, so you know nothing is hiding under fresh black paint. I wasn't any "expert" on these either when I bought mine, but it still had all the original paint on it, and was obviously never messed with, which was enough to prove to me I was getting the real deal.

Re: 1970 LS-6 Closed Element Air Cleaner

Not referring to this particular ebay auction discussed here.
This air cleaner style can be homemade by using other air cleaners parts also.I used to have a single snorkle, same length as the dual, that worked very well to make a dual.I stamped "HOMEMADE" on the inside bottom of it,then sold it as a homemade unit for $100.00,& still see some out there today. It is pretty easy to tell if they were homemade. All its parts can be found to make, although they will look homemade, but some don't care,& are honest about that.
As far as the 1970 L78 Chevelle using them,I have never seen that.It was built to early in the model year, then cancelled before the dual snorkle design was released. The Dual snorkle code for the Chevelles was CO on the buildsheet.I would like to see a 1970 Chevelle L78 Buildsheet reflecting that,it if anyone has one.
The LS6 Chevelle was a later produced RPO,& received the dual snorkle sometimes, starting in Spring of 70.
I believe this Dual snorkle design was produced & slated for the Newly designed 1970 Corvette, with the LS6 engine option. Not having anything to do with carburetor noise issues with other cars. This also was why the new low aluminum intake was designed, because of the new 1970 Corvettes BB hood to engine clearance.
The 1970 Corvette RPO LS6 never fruitioned,so the factory used up the already produced Dual Snorkle inventory on the remaining low rise Aluminum intake later built LS6 Chevelles,L78 Camaros,& L78 Novas when possible.

Re: 1970 LS-6 Closed Element Air Cleaner

Did all 1970 L78 Camaros have this air cleaner? Was it introduced sometime later into production due to either noise complaints or to eliminate GMs stock pile.

Re: 1970 LS-6 Closed Element Air Cleaner

As far as I know all of the 70 L78 Camaro’s built had the Dual Snorkel air cleaner.
That was probably the first thing changed, I know I would have taken that BIG A$$
air cleaner off if I had brought an L78 back in the day. The AIR and exhaust was probably
the second thing that was swapped out. If we only knew then what we know now……
BTW, The air cleaner was a CO code on the Camaro build sheet also..

1 Attachment(s)
1971 LS-6 Corvettes used an open-element design air cleaner, part #6485239, with a base like the one shown in this attachment. I would think that this part probably would also have been used had there been a '70 LS-6 Corvette. I don't have an assembly manual for the 1970 model to check for any LS-6 cancellation pages, but the LS-5 & LT-1 also used an open-element design, #6485887.
