Well guess what.. I got off my ass today https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif After putting new front brakes and a new rotor on my "new" 74 Nova.. I thought.. you know.. It's time for the Olds.. I'm a do it yourself type of guy but a neighbor of mine come over when he saw me manuvering this thing around the driveway myself to line it up with the rear bumper of the nova so I could push it to the garage with the Nova.. So I got him to help me lift the hood off anyway. But the work has begun... I'm going to be asking questions on the best way to repair a few things... First and formost is whats the best way to repair rust damage to the ROOF..?? I yanked the old vinyl top off it and the rust damage is bad.. That's the only part of this car with rust damage supprisingly.. Any advice guys? I'm still in the scraping process and I'll post some pics tomorrow. But it's in the garage now and I'm motivated. Just want to make a decent driver with this 68 Olds.. I could care less about Numbers and correctness.. Just want it to be finished and look and perform the way it makes me happy as it's going to be my daily driver. ED--- how you repair the roof would depend on if your gonna put back the vinyl roof ,if your not gonna put back the vinyl, you might want to replace some roof metal--the roof really reflects light so you'd want to address it right.---IMO

Ed, I wish you were close to Utah, I've got a whole roof panel I cut off A 74 about midway up the windows, no way to ship something like that but it really deserves a good home before I use it for scrap. Brent

Me and Larry (pantara) had a discussion about my fukked up roof last night.. Last evening I spent about 2 hours with a 3" handled razorblade scraper on it and got all the loose crap off.. the pitting is horrible and it's thin in spots... I'll post some pics tonight. But i'm thinking of just using POR15 on it and some minor filler. I haven't determined if I"ll put new vinyl on it or not.. any suggestions? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Do you know about Cagle Salvage near Summit? They are dirt cheap and use to have several old A body Olds, I bet a complete roof would be well under a $100 bill. It's on old Hwy 69 south of Muskogee about 8 miles, between Summit and Oktaha.

Unless you put a donor roof on the car I would put a vinyl roof back on the Olds. I had to clean up a 69 Firebird 400's roof area in the past. It seems the factory did not do a great job in prepping the roofs on cars that got a vinyl top. First DA the roof with 80 grit pads and skim coat the pitted areas with filler. Sand and Block the filler areas and the rest of the roof and shoot it in a Dupont or PPG epoxy / sealer primer. It's up to you at that point to shoot a color coat on the roof but there is no need since you used the epoxy / sealer primer. Then install the new vinyl roof and chrome trim. It will be a lot less costly then grafting a new roof to your car. I guess it all depends on how far you intend to go with it and how much you like or dislike vinyl roofs.
