Shay Nichols from Corsicana Tx.
 

What ever happened to her?
I have a few articles in older car mags,showing her next to her DH/FG prepped 1969 ZL-1 Camaro #2,but can never find any reference to what happened to her.
I see the records show that ZL-1 #2 was Destroyed,so did she expire with it,and if so when/where did that take place?
From what I have found,very little is wriitten about her during that time,& after.
Where was she discovered?
How did she get started?
How long was she racing,any titles?
Was she married,kids,any of them in the racing legacy today?
Thanks for anyones input.

I think she is still around. She did get married, but think she has since divorced. She ran Mopar Pro Stockers for a number of years after the ZL1 car.Her husband was her mechanic and crew chief I believe. The Dick Harrell website has more info on her. Sam

Rick I had asked Valerie Harrell about Shay and all she could say was good things about her. Val posted an article about Shay that tells her life story as far as drag racing is concerned. Attached is a cool pic of her and the ZL1.

Shays Charger
 

When I was a teen,a guy in my neighborhood had Shay Nicoles 66 Charger .It was Sammy Robertsons Chargin Charger at that point .He allowed us kids to be his ''pit crew '' which made us feel 10 feet tall .One day we were pulling the transmission and the drive shaft had a note written on it,,PHIL DO NOT TOUCH MY DRIVE SHAFT ..Always got a kick out of that .Sammy ,if you read this ,Thanx for making that time special for us kids . Shay ,if you see this ,,,LOL WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT .

ZL1 #2 is alive and well. MCR did a feature on it January 2009.

Shay Nichols is rumored to have raced ZL1 #5, Dusk Blue auto. However, photos of her '69 Camaro race car show a white interior. Only two ZL1s are known to have white interiors; both exist and were never raced. None of the Fred Gibb ZL1s had a white interior.

Until that is explained, no telling what her race car was originally.

Rumor has it #5 still exists but is now a tube frame race car. Very little remains of the original car.
