Saving paint marks
Have all the original paint marks on my spindles, wondering what is the best solution to soak them in to get the 30yrs of grease and dirt off without taking the paint marks with it so I can doucment where everything goes when I re-apply them, any ideas appreciated. Thanks

Re: Saving paint marks
HAD SOME BRAKE DRUMS WITH PAINT MARKS ON THEM BUT WANTED TO GET THEM LOOKING RIGHT. A FRIEND OF MINE OWNS A MACHINE SHOP AND I PUT THE DRUMS IN HIS HOT TANK AND THIS PROCESS LEFT THE PAINT MARKS INTACT. KP

Re: Saving paint marks
I would take pictures of them all in case the paint does come off. You can then re-apply if necessary.

Re: Saving paint marks
Jim,
I'm cleaning the underside of my car and have found that Krud Kutter and Greased Lightning degreaser works very well. Also have used kerosene in a spray bottle for some of the undercoating and years or dirt and grime. Just take your time and use rags and soft tooth brushes and you should retain all the original paint marks. I even uncovered the original "XU" paper tags on my frame rails and kept them mostly intact with the kerosene method. The crayon marks are a different story. You're on your own there! Good Luck, Dennis |
