found this while stripping my chevelle
while stripping my untouched 40,000 orig. mile 69 chevelle, i was removing the window crank and door latch from inside my door and i came across a chrome cansiter. it looks similar to an oiling cansiter but it is filled with somthing that is hard & dried. what is it? looks to me like someone at the GM plant left in it there. possibly used for caulking?? sorry about the poor pic. i ran out and took one quick. here it is,, the only writing, "PLEWS" is stamped on the top. definitely left in the door a long time ago. the car is a 40,000 mile, 2 owner, untouched car. the stuff inside the canister is hard. it seems to be about 1/4 full with broken chunks that you can hear inside when you shake it. i have no idea whatsoever what this is. what do you guys think? COOOOL, Take a pic of the outlet of the nozzel, would have to be decent sized to be shooting caulk or seam sealer.

Re: found this while stripping my chevelle
My guess is that its not from assembly line. The assembly line equipment would be high volume like a hose going to a 55 gal drum. It could be from home or dealer repair job.

Plews is still around, your find looks like an older version of one of their pistol oilers (see attachment)
you can check out their product line at http://www.plews.com Probably left in the door by a service station or dealer.. |
Re: found this while stripping my chevelle
well if its an oiler, theres not oil inside. perhaps it didnt contain the caulking used on the majority of the car but maybe a specialty caulk or lubricant of some kind? the outlet hole is small. while inspecting the door jambs of the chevelle i noticed a bead of somthing that could have been caulk about the same size as the outlet hole on the canister. just my observation

Re: found this while stripping my chevelle
I have an oiler that looks just about like that. Used to be my mother in laws. She passed 10 years ago at about 80. I don't know how long she had it.

Re: found this while stripping my chevelle
When you were taking the door apart did it look like the original paper between the door and door panel was still in place?
