1970 834 Alternators vs. 837's
Maybe somebody can help me out here, Colvin's book says that the 834 Alt. is correct for the 402 Nova (L34.?), yet my L78 Nova has, what appears to be an orig 837, Does the 837 denote Deep groove pulley and HP fan (mine has those items).???, I believe the 837 came stock on LS6's, not sure though. Thanks for the help

According to my Chevrolet by the numbers book, page 224 shows the 1970 Yenko Duece and the L78 402/375 hp Novas used the 37 Amp 837 atlernator (#1100837) What is the date code on yours? Ron [img]/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif[/img] |

How old is your CBTN book? My doesn't say anything about Yenko Deuce Novas, maybe Alan has added them to a later revision? Is the unique rear code in there as well? Alan and I talked about the rear code, the engine code, and the shifters on the Deuces several years ago, and I wasn't sure if the info would make it into his books. |

My CBTN is dated 1994 and it provides codes for the Deuces. The unique rear code is not listed.

The 837 37AMP Alternator applied on all the Solid Lifter engines.Also known as SPECIAL Hi-Perf engines.L-78,LS-6,LT-1.etc.It included the deep groove pulley and fan,but also the electrical internals were different then the 834,as well as the bearings to handle the higher RPM's.

According to the old GM parts book, the only difference between the '834 and '837 alternators is the pulley. The '834 got the small stamped pulley while the '837 got the larger deep grooved machined steel piece. The deep grooved pulleys were used on the solid lifter engines. 1100566, 1100836, 1100839, 1100841, and 1100842 are also the same except for the pulley. 1100742, 1100843, 1100845, and 1100917 have a different stator as well. All other internals are interchangeable.

Keith...that is interesting.
When I needed my 837 Alt. restored,I considered swaping out the guts with an 834.I was going to do it myself.I called JP in Georgia,when he said not to do that.He said there are more differences involved in that alternator,as I stated above,and that I should send it to him to be correctly restored internally.Now maybe he was just trying to make a sale,only cost me $85.00 back then,but I believed him. |

My CBTN I got in 2001 I believe. The copyright said 1994. I didn't see a 4.10 or 4.11 code being listed. I can't remember which the Dueces had. I see other areas like the distributor being listed for a Yenko Duece. Ron [img]/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif[/img] |

Wow! I will have to check my copy date, as I don't remember anything in mine referring to the Yenko Deuce.

Spoke to Jeff at Dated Components, he said that the only diff. between the 834 and the 837 is the Fan and Pulley, the # 837 simply indicated diff. fan and pulley, otherwise identical to the 834 in all other respects.
