Harrell driver

Just had an interesting visit with a former racer not far from here. His name is Frank Nichel, and, besides racing on his own, he drove for Dick. including the famed 1969 Gibb ZL-1 Camaro. A couple of things of interest. One, while working for Dick in St. Louis, he helped convert some Yenkos. Two, when Dick, Fred and Herb went to build an engine for Lil hoss, Dick contacted Frank to see what Frank did to his small block car to make it run so well. Frank remembered that once complete, the car was a "awesome" performer.

Tom,

That is incredible news! I will have to talk to him in the near future, as I am preparing to build a motor to run, as close to how it was built back then.

He should be able to help. He seemed to remember the whole situation pretty well. He knew about the special intake. He called it that "Yunick intake". Kept saying, that once finished, that car would fly. Talked about Herb also.

Tom. Was that Yunick intake the one with the flat plate over the plenum with a bunch of bolts all the way around it?

Re: Harrell driver

menmyfcs,

Fred and Herb received an early crossram 2x4 manifold from Vince Piggins in May of 1968, used it during the rest of the season, after the SpringNationals at Bristol. Smokey helped Chevrolet develop this in 1967-8.
