COPO painted wheels - sheen?
 

68/69 copo steel wheels - are the gloss black or some % of gloss?

There was no 'COPO' wheel. The standard wheel for 1969 COPOs 9560 & 9561 was the production 14 x 7 XT code wheel as used on Camaro SS. Painted black with wheel covers, body color with the standard hub cap. They were full-gloss; seen plenty in my day. Rally wheels were more of a satin finish, not much gloss.

1968 Yenko COPOs used Pontiac Rally II wheels, painted Argent.

From John Z's First-Generation Camaro Assembly Process on the CRG site:

Wheel Painting: The wheels were removed from the prime conveyor and placed in another conveyor system that took them through a booth where their faces were sprayed with color wheel enamel, then through an oven, and the conveyor continued to the wheel & tire assembly area where the wheels were picked off.

I think Eddie's talking about the back side of the wheel black color.......prior to painting the front side body color.

Thanks Jake, I was actually taking of the front, but now that you brought it up, both sides i need advise. I recall on my 68 copo i had body color on the front (XF) wheels.

I have a 68 L78 car we are working on - drum brake car, ordered with wheel covers - however - my question is related to the spare tire rim. We are proceeding with the gloss black for the front of the wheel for sure, however - the rear of the wheel - gloss too??

Sheet Metal Painting: All raw parts (wheels, brackets, etc.) and the front end sheet metal (hoods, fenders, lower fender extensions, header panels, front valances, radiator supports, inner fenders, etc.) went through a cleaning, degreasing, and hot phosphate system, then through a flow-coat booth where it was deluged with black primer from all directions and then baked.

The primer dried to a very dull finish.

So, from this description, the whole wheel is black primer, dried to a very dull finish, and the front side has paint applied on top, in a gloss finish (whatever paint is appropriate)

Yes, that is my understanding and how I painted my XT's. Make sure you let body color blow through the holes from front to back. If your painting black it probably won't show as the overspray will probably dry dull vs glossy.

Got it, similar to how we do the YH rally wheels, but they have bigger holes(slots) to let the color come thru.
